By using lists to manage twitter you can get a lot better experience. Learn how to use lists effectively. After gaining a certain amount of followers on twitter the activity stream usually gets a bit hard to follow. If you have over 1000 followers you can be pretty sure there are a handful of spammers on your activity stream. There are different ways to customize updates on twitter. One way to remove spammers is to block them, but I find it better to create lists of my favourite users. I use a different list with different criteria’s. I have the top-fans list which automatically includes people who have re-tweeted one of my tweets the last 30 days, and I have custom-built list where I add users I like to keep an eye on. Building a list is easy. For a general list where you can add any user you want this is the way to do it; After you create a new list, you can search for People to add to your list, but it are easier to just add users from their profiles. You can click the lists button and check the lists you want to add them to from the drop down menu. You can also add a user on multiple lists. You can also add users you don’t follow directly from the following page (the list of people following a profile) The maximum number of people you can have on a list is 500 today. For me that is more than enough for one list... Twitter also shows you how many public lists you appear on. If you find yourself on any lists you don’t wish to be on. This can be negative listings, for example. You can remove yourself from a list by blocking the person who created the list. For the top followers list I use forumlist : http://formulists.com/ I just create a list called top-followers, make it public, and the list updates itself.
